The weather is getting so nice here in Northern Utah, it only makes sense for Emily and I to put away the sewing machines and play out in the garage for a bit. Emily was inspired by the recent cute growth charts she’d spotted on pinterest, and came up with a modern twist on them to go with her decor. I admired her finished chevron wooden growth chart so much, I asked her to help me make one for my home.
You will need:
1 piece of 1″ X 8″ X 6 foot piece of board (I got mine from my local hardware store for just over $6)
Painters tape
Simply Notable’s Chevron Pattern
Paint
Package of 2″ vinyl numbers (or a stencil if you prefer).
Stain of your choice
X-acto knife or box cutter
Sandpaper
Pen or other marking tool
We started by staining our board. Be sure to stain the long sides of the board. We put on 2 coats to obtain the color we liked. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Using your painters tape, tape the boards end to end along the length of the board – being sure to overlap each piece of tape so that no wood shows through the tape.
Next, print and cut out the Simply Notable Chevron Template. Placing the pattern on chipboard (i.e. old cereal box) is very helpful. Starting at the bottom of the board and with the chevron middle pointing up towards the top of the board, trace the pattern onto the painter’s tape using a pen. Continue tracing the pattern along the length of the board. If there is a little bit of extra board where another chevron can’t quite fit on, feel free to leave it or cut it off. Your choice!
Using a straight edge and an x-acto knife or box cutter, cut along each line you traced.
Starting with the bottom, remove alternating chevrons.
Once every other chevron is removed, sparingly apply 2 coats of paint to the wood using a paint brush. After second coat is applied, immediately remove the remaining painters tape. Allow to dry thoroughly.
If you are using vinyl numbers, lightly distress the board with sandpaper and apply the numbers between every other chevron starting at the bottom with the number 1 and working your way up to the number 6. If you are using a stencil as I did, do not distress until the letters have been painted and dried thoroughly.
If you desire, apply a coat of finishing wax to the board for a nice matte finish. Apply a saw tooth hanger to the top back and find a place to hang it exactly 1 foot from the ground so the start of the chevron right under my number 1 will be exactly 1 foot high!
Happy growing, Crafty Friends!
